Discussing Animal Welfare with Tuk's Law Campaigners

Sue, Richard, Rebecca & Dawn

On Friday, Rebecca met with Tuk's Law campaigners, Dawn and Sue, to discuss animal welfare and the challenges facing rescue organisations.

Tuk’s Law campaigns for a legal requirement to scan the microchips of healthy, treatable animals prior to euthanasia. It is named after the heartbreaking case of Tuk, a healthy rescue puppy tragically put to sleep without a microchip check that would have saved him.

Rebecca previously introduced a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament to strengthen the law in this area. Unfortunately, the Government blocked it, although they have set up a fresh consultation.

Dawn, Sue and Rebecca were joined by Rebecca's Parliamentary neighbour Richard Holden MP, who has also been campaigning for tougher oversight of rescue centres following the shocking discovery of dozens of dead dogs at an unregulated rescue site in Crays Hill in his constituency.

The four of them discussed rescue back-up, microchip scanning and how we can better protect animals while supporting the many brilliant rescue organisations doing the right thing every day.

After the meeting, Rebecca said: "It was really good to meet with my constituent Dawn Ashley and Sue from the Tuk’s Law campaign on Friday.

"Everybody can agree that no pet should be put down without checking with the rightful owner, and if there are other options for it to lead a healthy life in a different home.

"A huge thanks to Dawn and Sue for all the work they continue to do on behalf of pets everywhere!"
