Conservative MPs Protest Labour's Job Tax

Conservatives protest the job tax

This week, Dame Rebecca Harris joined other Conservative Members of Parliament to protest the Government's Job Tax and the effect it will have, not just on businesses, but on teaching as well.

Labour's Job Tax has risked the jobs of 13,000 teachers up-and-down the country - double the number they pledged to recruit!

The Government has claimed that it will compensate schools for this tax but has failed to respond to claims that the proposed amount will not be enough. Alongside its reckless unfunded pay rises, schools are seeing shortfalls in teacher pay funding.

The CEO of the United Learning Group has said that the grant given to compensate was 20% short, while some schools will see shortfalls of up to 35%, forcing many headteachers into making decisions to let good staff go.

Previous Conservative administrations ensured schools were properly funded. In autumn 2022, it was announced that in 2023-24, schools would get an extra £2 billion of revenue funding and the same again in 2024-25.

In July 2023, further funding was also given for the next two academic years to support teachers' pay award. This was on top of the £1.5 billion increase schools were already set to receive in 2023-24, bringing the overall funding increase this year to £3.9 billion, compared to 2022-23.

Under Conservative Government, in 2024-25 schools received the highest ever funding in real terms per pupil. Labour seem hell-bent on undoing this work.

Dame Rebecca and her Conservative colleagues have called for the Chancellor to fully compensate schools at the upcoming spending review to save our teachers.
